A Magical Week!

Richard and I, along with David, Karen and Nila, spent an absolutely "magical" week in Florida! All the good stuff: Wonderful resort with a "lazy river"; we rented tubes and went floating down and around and through the water. Took an airboat ride and saw birds and fish, but the only alligator was a little one at the dock; it was fun, but VERY noisy and Nila did NOT like the lifevest she had to wear! We couldn't believe she actually fell asleep on the ride! Spent a day at Kennedy Space Center; favorite thing to see was the IMAX film...amazing! Three days at DisneyWorld...wow! Loved everything, specially Pirates of the Caribbean, Spash Mountain, It's a Small World, Soarin' (this was fantastic!), Toy Story Mania (my favorite!), Beauty and the Beast play, The Seas with Nemo, the World Showcase (pastries at Norway...yummy!), IllumiNations, Fantasmic and the Magic Kingdom parade and fireworks. It was so fun to share this time with David and Karen and 18 month old Nila, who is so good-natured and adorable! On Sunday, I took Richard to my home town of Fort Meade (population about 5000) and showed him where I grew up...I was born in Bartow, FL, lived in Fort Meade until I graduated from high school, except for a few years in Virginia from about age 5 to 7. We went by the cemetery and I shed a few tears, missing my loved ones. The best part was getting to visit my childhood friends, Becky, Earlene and Jeanne and their husbands. We spent several hours in Bartow at Earlene and Ron's home and Earlene gave me a jar of guava jelly she and her son Michael had made. I carefully packed it and brought it back to Eagar and had the jelly on toast the very night we got home! It was wonderful! Thank you SO much, Earlene! We also spent some time at Becky and Brent's home and after Brent showed Richard his shop, Richard wanted one like it! All of us met that evening at Jeanne and Bubba's home for spaghetti and garlic bread (which was delicious, thanks so much for having us!) and we had a great reunion, with lots of laughter and sweet memories. I feel so blessed to have such good friends and enduring friendships through all the years and miles separating us! BFF!

I can't believe it's been a month and a half since I've "blogged"! So much to catch up on....serves me right for not keeping up better. Oh well, just to summarize: We had a great visit with our friends, Steve and Linda Genteline from Ohio. We reminisced about Linda's uncle and our dear friend Hiram Smith who died last December, introduced them to the fun game of Quiddler, watched our "pet" hummingbirds and took a drive to South Fork. I went back to Sandy, UT for 12 days to be with my Mom and Dad when Dad had surgery on his upper and lower eyelids for ptosis. Dad has had quite a trial post-op; he had to have his right eye restitched FOUR times, but at last he is healed and doing well (except for neck pain from falling into the irrigation ditch in his garden). He says he is getting better from that too and we continue our prayers for him and my Mom, who has been having trouble with pain in her hip. They are such wonderful people and we are so thankful for every chance we get to spend time with them. My friend, Linda, came over while I was in Sandy and we talked and talked and talked! We are still looking forward to getting together with our friend, Sherry for a long week-end, sharing stories, watching movies, eating and talking some more! Richard is still working with Luke on some remodeling jobs. He went turkey hunting with his sons, Luke and Eric last week and they shot a wild turkey. Thanksgiving dinner??? I've been crocheting edging around receiving blankets for all the new babies arriving. Courtney (Richard's niece) and husband Stephan have a new baby daughter, Elizabeth, called Ellie; Kaleena and Donald (friends and new neighbors) have a new baby girl, called Taizley; Kyle's sister Beth and her husband are expecting a baby boy this month and our friends Fred and Sherry are expecting a new grandson any day from their daughter Kelly and her husband. Have also been sewing a quilt top for humanitarian services for the church. I admit I don't love sewing, but I'm perservering...wish my sister Betty were here to guide me, she makes beautiful, amazing quilts! What else? I get to tend baby Kody on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and he is such an adorable little cutie! Beau comes to play at our house, too and we have a lot of fun building cities on the playroom floor. I guess this will have to do for a quick recall and I'll have to do better in the future!

Richard put some brackets up on our back patio so we could hang our windchimes AND a hummingbird feeder! Those little birds are so entertaining! There are 3 or 4 that come for sugar water, but the one in the pictures thinks he's the boss! He chatters at the others and chases them off. We sit in our swing and watch them and they don't even seem to notice us anymore!

After Angie & Kyle's wedding, Jill and two of her children, Daesha (5)and Clarris (2)and Sara with her children, Braedy (9) and Lilly (5) came to Eagar for a visit. It was so fun for Richard and I to have them here! Unfortunately, Sara and Braedy were ill with the flu, then Lilly ended up going to the ER with dehydration and Daesha was coming down with mononucleosus, so we had some sickies for a while! We had a great time when we all went to South Fork for a picnic and had their cousin Braydon (10)come with us. They had a good time getting to know cousins Beau (3) and baby Kody (3months) and Norma (2). We also went to Show Low to the movies, went swimming at the town pool, checked out books from the library and dvd's from RedBox, visited great gma Eagar and everyone tried out Gma and Gpa's hot tub! Jill, Sara and I were able to go to the Snowflake AZ Temple together and that was a special day. Sara stayed a week longer than Jill and we took Sara and the kids to the Very Large Array in New Mexico and to Pie Town for, of course, a piece of pie! Lilly lost a tooth while she was here, so we put it in a special little box for her to take back to Pennsylvania.

Last week, while Richard stayed busy here at home,working with Luke and planting grass seed in our front yard, I flew to Sandy to be with my Mom and Dad. Dad had fallen onto cement off the back stairs into the house on Saturday night and spent 6 hours in the ER with Mom and Byron. He had stitches to his eyebrow and a CAT scan showing multiple non-displaced fractures of his right orbital bone. Over the next week, we went to 3 different doctor appointments and back to the ER for another CAT scan. The REAL challenge was trying to keep Dad from doing too much in his garden -you just can't keep a good man down! I'm happy to say he is healing well and is still as good-lookin' as ever! A few other highlights of this trip:

Enjoyed seeing Byron & Shauna and their sweet grandchildren, Thiago & Kaleb...and Shane for just a minute when he flew in to pick the kids up to go back to Florida!
Went to the Jordan River Temple with Angie & Kyle...they've been married a whole month! Mom, Dad and I saw the house they're renting (they've fixed it up so cute), then went to lunch together. They picked apricots from their trees and shared with us!
Fixed Mom's computer so it's connected to the internet and works fast!
David, Karen & Nila came for lunch one day and we had a wonderful visit, then they came for Sunday dinner with the rest of the family. Nila is so entertaining, running around with her happy smile and all that energy!
I loved getting up early with Mom, picking raspberries and snapping green beans while we watched the hummingbirds fly in for breakfast at the feeder.
Mom and I did just a little shopping and found new curtains & a floor and table lamp for their office.
Saw my dear friend Fran at the ER for a few minutes and did a little catching up!
Played a game of Croquet with Mom, Angie & Kyle while Dad watched. Kyle not only won but knocked all of us out of the game!
It was fun to watch David and Kyle show a few soccer moves to Thiago and Kaleb!

our beginning...

I've told this story many times, but thought I'd write it down "for posterity" or something like that! In 1998, I was living in St. George, Utah, working as an ICU nurse and for Life Flight at Dixie Regional Medical Center. An acquaintance, Julene, was "chatting" with a man, Steve, from Arizona and he was planning to come to St. George to meet her. She asked if I would like to double date with a friend of his, Richard, who would be coming with him. I thought, "Oh great, a blind date...and at my age!" I agreed, however, and plans were made for February 13th. Julene called me from her home and said they were coming over to pick me up. I remember teasingly saying something like, "Well, I don't know if I want those Arizona cowboys to know where I live!" She evidently told them that, so my date was kinda humped up and thinking he didn't even want to show up! When Julene rang the doorbell at my home, she said to me, "Can you tell which one is yours?" Richard and Steve were both walking up the driveway, and about all I knew about Richard was that he was tall, 6'4". As he was the taller of the two, as he approached the door, I said to him, "You must be mine!" And, sure enough, he was! Little did I know that not only were the words true then, but they would be true for now and forever! We had a wonderful first date, dinner at "2 Lazy 2 Ranch" restaurant, then back to my house for a movie, "When Harry Met Sally" and 5 or 6 different desserts, brought over by Julene. (WAY too many, but they were all good!) Richard and Steve were so fun and funny and I had a great time, but wondered if I would see Richard again...his home in Arizona was 8 hours away!

Several months had passed and although Richard called me a few times in the first few weeks after our date, I never seemed to be home and only heard his brief messages on my answering machine. Then, one evening when I was on call for Life Flight, I received a page to fly from St. George to Cedar City to evaluate and transport a husband and wife to Salt Lake City. They had been involved in an auto accident near Brian Head Ski Resort. I was surprised and AMAZED to discover they were from Eagar Arizona and were friends of Richard! I mean REALLY, what are the chances??? Anyway, I told the husband the next time he saw Richard to tell him to call me! It was only a few days later when Richard did call me and I said, "Oh, how are your friends?" He didn't know what I was talking about! Turns out he had lost my phone number and finally found it again through phone records and just happened to call me right after I took care of his friends! (who, by the way, thankfully recovered from the accident.) We spent many hours over the next month (and the next year) talking on the phone and getting to know each other. When we were able to spend time together in person, we kept on talking and laughing, sharing family stories and life histories and then, planning our wedding!

Our sealing in the St. George Utah Temple was performed by President Robert Winston and we were delighted to have his sweet wife Suzannah there too. I had taken care of Bob in ICU months earlier and everyone had a good laugh when he introduced himself in the sealing room. He explained that he had been a patient in ICU and how surprised and excited he was when his beautiful (his word, not mine!) nurse asked him to marry her! We were thrilled to have so many family members and friends join us for our wedding and the luncheon following. We combined our two families with my children, David, Kristi, Jill, Sara and Angela and his children, Rachel, Eric and Luke and decided right away that we would try to show love equally to all of them...and, yes, sometimes it's been a bit of a challenge! (But, as the years have passed, we have found our love for each other's kids has grown and strengthened...and we hope theirs for us has too!) The grandchildren, as they've come along, have stolen our hearts and they are most definitely loved by both of us!
